Fly-half James O’Connor will play his first Test match in the northern hemisphere for four years after being selected to start Saturday’s sold-out showdown with Ireland in Dublin.

The 35-year-old Leicester player, who will partner Jake Gordon at half-back, is among six personnel changes made by head coach Joe Schmidt following last weekend’s 26-19 defeat by Italy.

Len Ikitau returns to join Joseph-Aukuso Sua’ali’i at centre, while there are recalls for Filipo Daugunu on the right wing and full-back Max Jorgensen.

In the front row, Allan Alaalatoa comes in at tighthead prop to combine with hooker Matt Faessler and Ulster-bound loosehead Angus Bell.

Rob Valetini is restored at blindside flanker, with Tom Hooper moving into the second row alongside Jeremy Williams.

Australia began the month with a 25-7 defeat to England and have lost three of their past four matches.

Schmidt said: “It’s been a tough schedule, but we’ve tried to embrace that this week and tried to freshen up at the same time.

“It’s another opportunity this Saturday to really challenge ourselves against one of the top teams in the world.”
